buntingflagslarge.jpgBunting for Woolfest

For Woolfest 2010 we had the idea of getting our friends and visitors to make some bunting to brighten up the show. We were overwhelmed by the response and this is now a long term project!

Thanks so much to everyone who donated some very colourful contributions. An incredible 100 metres was contributed during Woolfest 2011. We now have 145 metres of pennants which stretches half way round the venue. The aim is to keep adding to it through the coming year and eventually encircle Mitchell's completely.

We would like triangles made out of wool or any natural fibre. They can be knitted, crochet, felted, woven or a combination of any of these - as plain or as fancy as you wish; just bring them to the show and leave them at the information desk

They must be no bigger than an A4 piece of paper - that gives a maximum width of about 20cm and a length/depth of about 30cm.

Attached are a couple of suggested knitting and crochet patterns courtesy of Wool Clip member, Ruth Strong and Woolfest regular, Avril Jennison.

Knitted bunting

Here is a simple knitted triangle in garter stitch to get you started. You can vary this as you like - Ruth's original incorporated stripes of colour.

Cast on 2 stitches and knit in garter stitch (knit every row)
Increase one stitch at the beginning of every 3rd row.
Continue until work on your needle measures about 20-22cm
Cast off and sew in ends.

To make the triangles I started at the point and worked upwards.

The two variations are both made using a 4mm hook and the yarn I used was J C Brett Pure Merino DK. The triangles can be made by any yarn thickness - just change the size of the hook used.

Repeat Rows 1 to 3 until triangle is as large as you require.

Avril has also created some more variations and ideas for the bunting - see www.woollyone-offs.co.uk for details.
